So, how far in advance should you book your gorilla permit?

We Recommend Booking 3–6 Months in Advance

For most travelers, booking your gorilla permit at least 3–6 months before your planned trekking date is a good idea. If you are traveling during a busy period, such as June to September or around the December holidays, booking even earlier is advisable.

Gorilla trekking is a controlled conservation activity with a limited number of visitors allowed to track each habituated gorilla family each day. This means permits for your preferred date and trekking sector can become unavailable, particularly during popular travel periods.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) allows permits to be reserved for tracking dates up to one year in advance, subject to availability.

Many travelers combine gorilla trekking with destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest, Lake Bunyonyi, or other parts of Uganda.

What If I Am Traveling During Peak Season?

If you are planning to visit Uganda during a popular travel period, we recommend booking as early as possible.

Peak travel periods can see increased demand for gorilla permits, accommodation and safari vehicles. Booking several months ahead gives you more flexibility and a better opportunity to organize the trip you want.

However, Uganda’s gorilla trekking experience is available throughout the year, so travelers with flexible dates may have more options outside the busiest periods.
