Twenty minutes later, those guests watch the pride wake up in the open. No guesswork involved. That small exchange is safari technology at work, and it’s changing what a Uganda trip actually looks like.

Safari guiding used to rely almost entirely on instinct, radio chatter, and the previous day’s tracks. That instinct still matters. But it now works alongside real data. This kind of safari technology has quietly reshaped how guides find animals each morning.
The Wildlife Conservation Society has fitted satellite radio collars on elephants in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley National Parks since 2006. This safari technology maps the home ranges that reveal where herds travel and which corridors matter most for their survival.
Queen Elizabeth National Park has also collared dominant male lions. Rangers track their movements to protect cubs from rival males and to reduce conflict with nearby communities. Julius Obwona, the park’s officer in charge of law enforcement, has described how this monitoring feeds directly into ranger operations. Ultimately, it shapes what guides can show visitors.
The clearest proof of impact sits in the human-wildlife conflict numbers. Queen Elizabeth once recorded around 400 cases a year of elephants raiding community land. New boundary trenches and community crop-planning have helped. So has tech-assisted monitoring. Together, they’ve cut that figure to fewer than 30 — a shift that protects both farmers and elephants, and keeps the animals visible in the park rather than pushed toward retaliation.
For a first-time visitor, none of this shows up as a gadget in your hands. It shows up as a guide who already knows roughly where the pride slept.
Ranger technology and the fight against poaching
Since 2021, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has run EarthRanger across four protected areas: Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley, and Pian Upe. The platform, donated by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, sits at the centre of a wider shift in ranger technology. Rangers on patrol carry smartphones loaded with the EarthRanger app. They log GPS coordinates of arrests and incidents in real time. Obwona notes that this data now supports the prosecution of poachers directly, rather than relying on memory and paper reports written days later.
At each of these parks, UWA runs a joint operations command centre. It pulls together patrol data, GPS-collared animal movements, and aerial surveillance in one place. Rangers report that drones fly at least four unmanned patrols daily across these landscapes. They watch for movement a ground patrol alone would miss.
None of this technology replaces the ranger walking the boundary at first light. It simply means that walk is now backed by data instead of guesswork. For the wildlife populations a safari depends on, that’s a meaningful difference.
Booking your trip: e-visas, permits, and the limits of digital
Uganda’s entry process has moved almost entirely online. Since 2016, the government has required travellers to apply through an electronic visa and permit system before arrival. Applicants upload a passport scan, photo, and yellow fever certificate rather than mailing documents to an embassy. Biometrics are then taken on arrival. For most nationalities, this digital shift cuts a process that once took weeks down to a few days.
Gorilla permits tell a more complicated story about safari technology’s limits. The Uganda Wildlife Authority does operate a digital booking system with real-time availability across Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, where roughly 160 permits go out daily. However, that system isn’t yet open for individual travellers to book directly the way a flight or hotel is. Most visitors still go through a licensed tour operator, who checks the system and handles payment on their behalf.
That’s not really a failure of technology. It’s a deliberate bottleneck. Uganda caps permits to protect the gorillas from overexposure. Routing bookings through operators also helps prevent the scams that circulate around high-demand, high-price permits. A traveller should still expect to book six months ahead in peak season, tech or no tech.
Staying connected in the bush
This is where expectations and reality diverge most. Coverage in Kampala and along major highways is genuinely strong, with MTN offering reliable 4G in towns and cities. That coverage thins fast once you head into the parks.
Around Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Lake Mburo, signal holds up near entrance gates and lodges but turns patchy further in. In Bwindi’s forest, most visitors get only an intermittent 2G or 3G signal at the lodge or ranger post. Once trekking begins among the trees, expect none at all.
Starlink has become the obvious fix for remote connectivity elsewhere on the continent. It’s already live in neighbouring Kenya and Rwanda. Uganda is a genuine exception. As of 2026, the Uganda Communications Commission has not approved direct-to-consumer Starlink service, even after President Museveni publicly welcomed the company.
Some lodges have quietly tested satellite terminals anyway. At least one Bwindi property reported losing that connection abruptly when the government intervened. Until the regulatory picture changes, most mid-range and luxury lodges rely on shared broadband hubs or standard satellite internet instead. These work, but rarely match home broadband speeds.
Practically, that means solid Wi-Fi at lodges like Mweya Safari Lodge or Paraa Safari Lodge. Expect it slower and less reliable in eco-lodges around Bwindi. Expect total disconnection during the trek itself. Pack accordingly, and tell people at home not to worry if you go quiet for a day.
Money, tipping, and mobile technology on the ground
Uganda’s mobile money infrastructure is one of the country’s genuine tech success stories, and it reaches into the safari industry too. MTN Uganda’s mobile money platform alone serves more than 12 million users. It lets lodge staff, drivers, and local vendors receive payments without a bank account. For travellers, that mostly plays out through card payments and cash tipping rather than mobile money directly, since most visitors don’t hold a Ugandan SIM.
Budgeting for tips still matters here, regardless of the payment method. Guides and drivers typically receive $10 to $20 a day. Porters usually get $5 to $10, plus additional tips for lodge staff. Carry small USD notes for this. Digital tipping infrastructure for foreign visitors hasn’t caught up with the mobile money system locals use daily.
Who benefits most, and what to keep in mind
Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers gain the most from tracking technology. It improves the odds of meaningful sightings without disturbing the animals. First-time visitors benefit most from the e-visa system, which removes a genuine source of pre-trip stress. Travellers weighing how much safari technology matters to their trip should also factor in connectivity limits. Anyone hoping to stay fully connected throughout a Uganda safari should adjust expectations, though — particularly around Bwindi and the more remote parks.
None of this safari technology substitutes for an experienced guide. It sharpens what that guide can do. It gives conservationists tools their predecessors never had. But the safari still depends on people who know the land.
Planning around what’s real
