Can You Combine Uganda Gorilla Trekking with a Visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park?

Combining Uganda Gorilla Trekking with a Visit to Queen Elizabeth, Yes. Many visitors pair a guided trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park, creating a varied safari that moves from mountain forest to savannah, lakes and waterways. The two parks are in southwestern Uganda, and one route between them passes through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. That can make the journey a scenic part of the itinerary, with an opportunity to look for wildlife along the way. Still, the route and travel time depend on your Bwindi trekking sector, road conditions, stops and accommodation locations. A map alone may not show how long a winding or unpaved section takes.

For a focused gorilla-and-savannah itinerary, allow at least five or six days; a week gives you more room to travel at a comfortable pace and add activities. Your gorilla permit is tied to a date and a designated Bwindi sector—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo—so confirm it before choosing accommodation or mapping the transfer. Queen Elizabeth National Park is extensive, and the best base depends on the activities you want, such as game drives in the Kasenyi plains, a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel or a visit to Ishasha. Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? Absolutely, provided the itinerary includes realistic transfer time and treats the trek as a full day rather than a quick stop. Uganda Wildlife Authority describes road access between the parks and identifies the Ishasha route as one way to travel between the Queen Elizabeth area and Buhoma.

What can you experience in Queen Elizabeth National Park?

Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? The combination works well because the two parks offer contrasting experiences. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, visitors can look for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, waterbuck, warthogs, hippos and a variety of birdlife. Game drives explore open grassland and other habitats, while the Kazinga Channel boat trip offers a different perspective from the water. Hippos are commonly associated with the channel and nearby rivers, and animals often gather along shorelines to drink. In the Ishasha sector, visitors may search for the area’s well-known tree-climbing lions, though sightings are never guaranteed. Queen Elizabeth also has chimpanzee tracking opportunities in Kyambura Gorge, subject to permits and availability.

The activities are distinct from the gorilla trek. Game drives usually involve scanning open terrain with a guide, while a boat cruise lets you watch animals and birds from the channel. Chimpanzee tracking is a forest walk and requires its own arrangements. Select the experiences that match your interests and available time rather than trying to fit everything into one short stay. Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? Yes, and the contrast is a major attraction: one day may take you into a mountain forest in search of gorillas, while another brings savannah wildlife or hippos along the Kazinga Channel. Uganda Wildlife Authority lists boat cruises, game drives and chimpanzee tracking among Queen Elizabeth activities. Wildlife remains unpredictable in every park, so guides can improve your chances through experience but cannot promise a particular sighting.

What are the expectations in this safari?

What are the expectations in this safari? Gorilla trekking is a guided forest hike, not a vehicle-based activity. The day begins with permit checks and a briefing at the designated visitor centre. Guides and trackers then lead the group into Bwindi, following information about the gorillas’ movements. Uganda Wildlife Authority says treks can last between two and seven hours, depending on where the gorilla family is found. The terrain may be steep, muddy, uneven or thick with vegetation, so a moderate level of fitness is helpful. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are generally allowed one hour to observe them. Each encounter is different; their natural behaviour cannot be scheduled, and no operator can guarantee a short trek or a specific interaction.

In Queen Elizabeth National Park, expect a more varied schedule: a game drive may take place in the early morning or late afternoon, while a channel cruise follows a set departure time. Chimpanzee tracking, when included, is another guided hike and should not be treated as an automatic add-on. Between parks, the road journey can be affected by weather, road conditions and stops, so avoid placing a tight flight connection after a transfer. Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? Yes, but allow enough time to enjoy both without rushing. Follow ranger and guide instructions, respect wildlife viewing distances, and do not trek if you are unwell with a contagious illness. Build in a rest period after the gorilla hike, particularly if you have had a long drive or demanding walk.

When is the best time for this safari?

When is the best time for this safari? Both parks can be visited throughout the year, but seasonal weather can influence trail conditions, road journeys and wildlife-viewing comfort. Many travellers prefer drier periods because forest paths may be less slippery and some roads easier to navigate. Commonly recommended windows for Uganda include June to September and December to February. These are broad patterns rather than guarantees: Bwindi is a mountain forest where rain can fall in any month, and conditions may change during the day. Queen Elizabeth also has varied habitats, so the experience may differ between open savannah, forested areas and the channel.

Permit availability should guide your dates. Secure the gorilla permit first, then coordinate your lodge, transfers and activities in Queen Elizabeth around it. If you have flexibility, consider a few possible trek dates to make it easier to match the permit with accommodation. Allow additional time in the schedule if travelling by road, especially when crossing between park areas or using the Ishasha route. Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? Yes, in every season, provided you prepare for changing weather and avoid an overly tight schedule. Waterproof clothing and shoes with good grip are useful year-round. Check current permit terms, park rules, road conditions and activity availability with Uganda Wildlife Authority or your tour operator before booking, since operating details can change. If you plan to extend your trip with Kenya tours, Kenya adventures or Kenya safaris, include realistic time for regional flights and transfers.

Why choose Terenga Safaris Ltd for this particular safari?

Why choose us for this particular safari? Coordinating a gorilla trek and a Queen Elizabeth visit involves more than choosing two parks. The permit date and Bwindi sector affect where you sleep, which road route makes sense and how you reach the forest briefing. Your time in Queen Elizabeth should then be organised around the activities you most want to experience. Terenga Safaris Ltd can help you compare route options, plan overnight stops and choose a balance of gorilla trekking, game drives, boat trips or chimpanzee tracking. We can also help you decide whether to travel through Ishasha or use another route, depending on your itinerary and current conditions.

Before confirming, ask what the package includes, how the gorilla permit is handled, which transfers are planned and whether park activities require separate fees or bookings. Review cancellation terms and confirm accommodation locations against your trekking sector. A realistic itinerary should provide time for the forest trek, the transfer between parks and a proper wildlife experience in Queen Elizabeth, rather than just a night at each stop. Local guides and trackers bring valuable knowledge to the journey; follow their instructions and respect the communities near the parks. Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? Yes, and thoughtful planning can make the journey between the two parks part of a broader Uganda safari. Terenga Safaris Ltd aims to give you clear advice and a route that suits your dates, interests and preferred pace.

What should you pack?

What should you pack? Prepare for both forest trekking and savannah wildlife viewing. For Bwindi, wear long trousers, a long-sleeved top, sturdy hiking boots with good grip and thick socks. Bring a lightweight waterproof jacket, since rain is possible in the forest throughout the year. Gardening gloves can help protect your hands on the trail, and gaiters may be useful in muddy conditions. A small day pack should hold water, personal medication, a camera and other essentials. Spare clothing is useful after the hike. For Queen Elizabeth, bring neutral, comfortable clothing for game drives, sun protection, a hat and binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching or distant wildlife viewing.

A walking stick may help on steep or slippery ground; ask your operator whether one is available. Keep cameras and electronics protected from dust and rain, and pack layers for cool mornings and warmer daytime conditions. Carry your identification and permit information for check-in, and follow all guidance on photography and behaviour around wildlife. Can you combine Uganda gorilla trekking with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park? Yes, and packing for both habitats helps you make the most of the trip. Choose clothing that is practical for walking and comfortable for vehicle and boat activities, but avoid overpacking. With a confirmed permit, a suitable route and enough nights in each area, this combination can bring together Uganda’s mountain forest, savannah wildlife and waterways in one rewarding holiday. Terenga Safaris Ltd can help you plan the details.
